9th May                                                Melrose Win 7s Crown

Melrose were crowned Kings of 7s on Saturday when they beat Watsonians in the final to lift the Jed-Forest 7s trophy. Melrose had not been that impressive all day and went into the final as slight underdogs and things looked bad as they fell behind to 2 Andrew Turnbull tries but their very impressive forwards took control and they scored 6 tries in a row to seal a great victory. Watsonians did score 2 consolation tries but it was too late and Melrose won 36 - 28.

Melrose forward Jamie Murray had further reason for celebration when he was named Ravenstone Financial Management Ltd player of the tournament.

Jed were beaten 28 - 14 in the Semi final by Watsonians and that ensured the we finished 3rd in the Kings of The 7s table behind Melrose and Watsonians.

For all the results and the full Kings of the 7s table see the 7s page.

3rd May                                                  New Coaches For Jed

Jed-Forest are delighted to announce a new coaching set up for the 1st XV.

Calum Brown has been appointed head coach which is a fine reward for his guidance of the 2nds these last 2 years. Calum is also a former captain of Jed and led the team to success in the B.T Shield at Murrayfield in 1999.

Glen Gibson has also been rewarded for his huge part in the 2nds rapid climb up the leagues and he will assist Calum when he is available.

Clark Laidlaw will also assist and it is hoped that past players and Pro's from the Borders will also take some specialist training sessions.

3rd May                               Quick 7s Reports From Haddington & Earlston

Jed traveled to Haddington on Saturday to take place in their 7s tournament and they had a nightmare. The 1st round looked like a routine tie against un-fancied Hamilton but we struggled to an unconvincing win and only beat them 19 - 12 after a last gasp try.

The next tie saw us play old rivals Kelso and their fast improving squad was too much for us and the ran out 17 - 12 victors.

The day was spoiled even more by the news that Billy Graham had his jaw broken by a punch in a very unsavory incident in the Kelso game. Billy had his jaw wired on Monday and he is expected to return to work later this week.

Jed fared better at Earlston where we have a great record. After a major panic around 12 o'clock when James Hogg called off, it was decided that Tom Elliot (a 3rds scrum half - 2nds winger) would be called up and boy did he do himself proud.

Jed were eventually knocked out 38 - 5 in the semi final by tournament winners Watsonians. Jed got to the semis by beating Duns 29 -5 the Selkirk 17 - 12 but only after extra time.

This semi final appearance keeps us in contention for the Kings of the 7s title but more realistically we are looking for 3rd.

19th Apr                                                  Barratt To Sponsor The 7s

Barratt East Scotland, Lothian’s most prolific housebuilder has been signed up as the new sponsor of the nationally renowned Jed Forest 7s tournament, which takes place on May the 7th.

The hugely popular event, now in its 104th year of playing will attract 16 quality teams from all over the country, including Melrose, Hawick, Watsonians and Kelso.

Robin Guest, Barratt East Scotland’s Managing Director comments;

This is the first time that we have undertaken such a sponsorship and we really are delighted to be part of this great Scottish tradition. Rugby and the Borders are as closely associated with each other as Barratt and houses, and we’ll be working closely with the organisers to ensure that this is a great festival of sport.

 John Ormiston, commenting on behalf of Jed-Forest RFC said;

On behalf of everyone from Jed-Forest rugby club I am delighted to welcome Barratt into the Jed family. We feel very honoured and proud that such a prestigious company as Barratt has decided to join us and help keep our fine reputation as a quality 7s tournament.

We are very fortunate to have Barratt joining our existing club sponsors, Turnbull, Simson & Sturrock, W.S. (solicitors & estate Agents) and the Carters Rest pub-restaurant who have been with us for a while now and we are looking forward to a fantastic day.

Sporting their hard hats and rugby shirts, Robin Guest & Diana Newton from Barratt and Kevin Amos from Jed-Forest were at Riverside to launch this year’s event.

18th Apr                                                     Jed Win Berwick 7s

Jed moved up to second in the Kings of the Sevens table on Sunday night after they won Berwick 7s. Played in conditions more suited to the 15s game Jed edged Hawick in a very exciting final. Jed were clinging on to a 24 - 19 lead when Greg Laidlaw collected the ball on the Hawick 22 and he swung his leg at the ball and landed a great drop goal to seal the game.

En route to the final Jed beat Alnwick 59 - 7, Peebles 19 - 10 and Watsonians 26 - 5. The rest of the scores are on the sevens page.

                                                                 Jed's winning squad at Berwick

Jed did not fair as well at Hawick on Saturday, where they were knocked out by Hawick in the second round, Hawick won 35 - 14. Jed beat Peebles 24 - 10 in the fist round. Newcastle Falcons beat the Royal Scots in the final.

The Second 7 reached the semi final of the Selkirk 7s, where they were beaten by eventual winners Howe Of Fife. Jed beat Langholm 2nds and St Boswells in the 1st 2 rounds.

The 3rds lost their cup final match against Melrose 3rds by 31 points to 17. Jed had opened up an early 9-0 lead through three penalties from Robin Laing however a Melrose try reduced the deficit to 9-5. A fourth penalty before half-time and a try immediately after the break from a great run by Frazer (Vinnie) Mortimer put Jed in the driving seat at 17-5 however, with the wind behind them, Melrose fought back to register four more tries to end Jed's dream.

14th Apr                                              Jed Juniors Big Day On Sunday

Jed Juniors (3rds) are playing Melrose 3rds in the Dryburgh Abbey Hotel District Shield cup final on Sunday at Riverside. They qualified with victories over Berwick 3rds and Eyemouth Seahorses at the start of the season and they were also awarded a win over Duns 2nds when Duns couldn't get a team.

The kick off is at 3pm and there is a Borders U16 v Yorskshire U16 at 1pm so come along and support Eithie and the boys.

5th Apr                                                Jed Only Reach Gala 2nd Round

Jed only reached the 2nd round of Gala 7s on Sunday. They beat Earlston (who were called up when G.H.A pulled out) 29 - 5 in the first round.

They met Selkirk in the second round and in a very fiery contest where Scott Laidlaw and the Selkirk prop were sin binned in 2 separate incidents. Selkirk ran out 14 - 0 nil victors and Jed were out.

Jed seemed very lack luster and we can only that Saturday game had taken more out of the boys than was thought.

All the scores from Gala are on the 7s page along with the full draw for Melrose 7s.

The 2nds were beat in the 1st rounds of both Langholm and the John Laing Kelso 7s. They were beaten by the K.O.S.B after extra time at Langhom on Saturday and the were stuffed by 40 points by Hawick 2nds at Kelso tonight.

5th Apr                                                 Jed End 15s Season In Style

With a spate of injuries and rested players Jed ended their league campaign with a terrific 22 - 12 victory over Edinburgh Accies on Saturday. Jed lead 12 - 5  at half time with Neil Smail and Kevin Amos scoring tries, Greg Laidlaw converted the 1st.

Greg kicked an early second half  penalty before Accies hit back with a converted try but Jed killed the game off when Gary McGarva went over for a try which Greg converted.

There was disappointment for Jed though as Billy Graham was unlucky to be the only player sent off after a brawl.

This was very encouraging after a long season and Team Manager Ali Campbell was full of praise for the young players who played their part.

28th Mar                                                         Gala 7s Draw

The draw has been made for Sundays Gala 7s and Jed have been given a tough looking task in the bottom half of the  draw where they will meet G.H.A in the 1st round.

The full draw is on the 7s page where you will see that I've added links to all of the tourneys at the top of the page.

27th Mar                                                  Berwick's 1st Ever Victory

Jed lost to Berwick for the 1st ever time at Scremerston yesterday. Jed were only trailing 10 - 5 at half time with Jed's points coming from a Brian MacDonnell try but it all fell apart in the 2nd half. Berwick kept kicking for position and from some silly and numerous Jed mistakes they punished us with 4 penalties and a drop goal that made the final score 25 - 5.

Jed did take Ross Goodfellow off at half time but that was pre planned and shows how meaningless this game really was to Jed who are in hard training for the spring sevens circuit which starts at Gala on Sunday.

The seconds also had a second half collapse when they were beaten 22 - 13 by Hawick 2nds on Friday night. Jed were leading 3 - 0 at half time but Jason Gill who was making his comeback from injury was only allowed half a game and the rest of the forwards tired badly in the second half. Jed's points came from a Paul Cranston try, converted by Greig Laidlaw who also kicked 2 penalties.

The 3rds game was called off on Friday night when Duns failed to raise a team.

15th Mar                                                        2nds Promoted

The 2nds have been promoted for the 4th year running after they drew 29 - 29 with Ayr 2nds on Saturday. They will now play in the Scottish 2nd XV League division 1 next year which is the highest standard possible and this justifies Jed decision to join the national leagues 4 years ago.

In the game itself Ayr went ahead with an unconverted try but then Jed hit a hot streak and scored 26 unanswered points in the first 25 minutes through tries by Tim Van Vliet, James Hogg, Graig Goodfellow and Robin Laing, Robin also kicked 3 conversions. Some very slack tackling let Ayr back into the game and Jed could only manage a penalty though Robin Laing and the game was tied at 29 - 29. Jed had a great chance to win the game but a 3 man was spurned near the end of the game and it ended all level.

Coach Calum (Beige) Brown was very pleased with the promotion and said "the unbeaten home record that we achieved was undoubtedly the major factor behind our promotion"

7th Mar                                                Jed Get Revenge on Dundee

Jed scored a narrow 27 -24 victory over Dundee on Saturday and avenged the 26 - 0 defeat earlier this season.

The game started well for Jed when Ross Goodfellow sold a massive dummy from the base of a scrum near the Dundee line and he went under the posts, Gary McGarva converted. Dundee then scored a converted try of their own to tie the scores. Jed finished the half in front when Scott Laidlaw did well to squeeze in at the cop end corner to make it 12 - 7 at half time.

Dundee kicked an early penalty in the second half to bring the score closer but Jed hit back when Neil Cook was driven over by the pack and again McGarva converted. Simon Lightbody was next on the score sheet after he stretched over after a great run. This made it 24 - 10 and it looked all over but some very slack tackling and some great hands from Dundee allowed them to score 2 tries and the game was tied at 24 - 24. Just as it looked like a stalemate, Dundee were penalized for using hands in a ruck. Greg Laidlaw was now on the pitch and he slotted the penalty brilliantly with the last kick of the game.

A good win for Jed but there was bad news for Neil Cook who damaged his lateral ligament and looks to be out for the season.

20th Feb                                                    Jed Bemused by Ref

Jed slipped to a 14 - 5 defeat at the hands of Haddington yesterday. Haddington had the upper hand in the scrums and went into a 7 - 0 lead. Jed had loads of chances to take a lead into half time but could only muster a try in the corner from Jamie McCraw.

Haddington seemed to be allowed to lay their hands on the ball when ever they liked and their spoiling tactics were making Jed  increasingly frustrated and Haddington scored again when a pass from Gary McGarva bounced off Scott Laidlaw straight into the hands of a Haddington player and he scored under the posts.

Jed team manager Ali Campbell was bemused by some of the referee's decisions which allowed Haddington to spoil a lot of Jed's ball. He said we had chances galore in the first half and that we were the only team trying to play ruby but it was impossible due to some funny rule interpretations by the ref. He also said it was great to see Greg Nagle (who was on loan from the Thistle to cover the front row) get a little run out at the end of the game.

The 2nds had a great 20 points to 11 win against Aberdeen Grammar 2nds at Riverside. Jed's points came from 2 tries by winger Robert Hogg who was making a very impressive debut for the seconds (he was on loan from the Thistle for the day) and a try from Ian Hedley. Robin laing kicked a penalty and a conversion.

Coach Calum Brown was delighted by the win and couldn't fault the effort of the players on the day but he did voice his concern at the lack of players training and he said it was obvious who was training because they stood out in today's game.

And from a personal point from me the webmaster. Surely it's not right that the seconds coach has to make 27 phone calls this week to get a 2nds team on the pitch for yesterday.

14th Feb                                           Over £15000 Raised at Gary Dinner

Fridays Dinner at Kelso to celebrate Gary Armstrong's hugely successful rugby career was a great success and  over £15000 was raised to start up a trust fund in Gary's name for the development of youth rugby in Jedburgh.

Congratulations must go to the organizing committee of Roy Laidlaw, Bill Johnston, Jim Thompson, George Forsyth, Ian Clarkson and Jock Henderson for a hugely impressive effort.

A final total will be ready soon.

11th Feb                                                    Jed 38 Langholm 12

Jed beat a stuffy Langholm side by 38 points to 12 at Riverside tonight. Jed were near full strength and it took them till the 15 minute mark before Greg Laidlaw squirmed over near the posts and he converted his try. Further tries by Tim Van Vleit and Neil Cook saw Jed leading 17 - 0 at half time.

Jed made a few changes at half time resting Goody and Hendy and Langholm were first to score. Jed then hit back with a try from Jamie McCraw but Langholm hit back with another try to show they were not dead and they were out scoring us in the 2nd half by 12 points to 7. Auld stager Kevin Amos was having none of that though and he went over in the corner to kill the game off, Jamie McCraw added another try to finish the scoring, Greg Laidlaw converted all the 2nd half tries.

31st Jan                                        Update at last.........Sorry Ed is on holiday!

After being totally outmuscled up front against a decent Stew Mel side the previous week things were looking pretty grim when Murrayfield scored the first try of the game with about 55 minutes played to lead 5-3 in what most people were saying was a dreadful game to that point. The dramatic turnaround in Jeds' play was sparked by a superbly taken try from full back Neil Smail, who cut a brilliant angled run to touch down at the posts. Jed continued to press and were rewarded with another fine score when Ross Goody chipped a clever kick over for winger Amos to gather the kind bounce with no defenders reacting to cover his well timed run.

Jed 2nds were also taking on Murrayfield Wands and after losing their way a bit recently, returned to form with a fine 46-7 victory due mainly to the domination of the Jed pack with Paul Cranston having a memorable day with an amazing 4 TRIES . The other tries were scored by forwards as well with Rob Ferguson and Gary Douglas also scoring. Nod Laing also weighed in with 5 cons and 2 penalties.

A clean sweep was denied though as the 3rds went down to Hawick Quins in their match at the glebe.

16th Jan                                        Jed Win Border Derby Cracker

Jed won a cracking old fashioned Border Derby played in front of another big crowd against Kelso yesterday. Kelso got of to a flyer and were 3 - 0 up after 8 min's through a drop goal. Jed hit back with a Greg Laidlaw penalty and the teams swapped further penalties to make it 6 - 6. Kelso, playing with the wind had the last laugh in the first half though when they scored a try to take an 11 - 6 lead into the break.

Greg Laidlaw gave Jed a good start to the second half with a penalty, but Kelso went further ahead though a neat move from Ian Fairly and Roxy, with Roxy going over for the try. This spurred Jed on and Simon Lightbody went over at the corner flag and Greg kicked a great conversion to level up the scores. Jed then scored a try through Bevan Hart who was driven over the line from a lineout, again Greg Kicked the conversion. The game was then sealed by another penalty from Greig to keep Jed in the hunt  for 2nd place in the league.

The 2nds did not fair so well yesterday though. After struggling to find enough backs for weeks this was a game to far for the patched up back division and they went down by 52 points to 7 at the hands of their main promotion rivals G.H.A 2nds. Jed playing against a strong wind in the 1st half were still in the game going into half time 28 - 7 down but they couldn't take advantage of the elements and G.H.A scored 4 more tries ( all from their own 22) to show up our weaknesses. Jed's points came from a Kym Townsend try who continues his come back following injury and a Donald Grieve conversion.

Sorry only 1 picture Roddys camera is too good quality and the picture file would take forever to load for everyone.

5th Jan                                              2nds Lose to Selkirk

The 2nds were edged out 15 - 12 by their Selkirk counterparts in a controversial game last night. Jed had prop Nicky Bates sent off in the 1st half for his part in a 30 man brawl even though he was possibly the only man not to land a blow. Jed struggled with 14 men and all their points came from the boot of Donald Grieve.

27th Dec                                              Jed Just Edged out

Jed were edged out by 11 points to 8 by Hawick today in a typically hard fought border derby played in front of a bumper crowd. Jed fell behind to an early penalty but soon went  in front though a Bevan Hart try scored from a sloppy Hawick lineout on their own line. Disaster struck next when Jed were attacking but a Clark Laidaw pass was intercepted and the Hawick centre raced clear to put them 8 - 5 up at half time.

Jed equalized through a Greg Laidlaw penalty and the rest of second half  was very much a tug 'o' war affair. Hawick were playing with the wind and luckily for Jed they missed several long range penalties. Jed had 3 great breaks but could not find the killer pass and it was left to the Hawick substitute stand off to drop a killer drop goal from just out side the 22 to seal the game for Hawick allowing them to be the 1st name on the Skelly Cup.

Not a classic game by any means but very enjoyable all the same and it was fantastic to see such a big crowd, lets hope the SRU take note.

13th Dec                                               Jed Back On Track

Jed's 1st and 2nd's got their league campaigns back on track with close wins on Saturday but there was disappointing news from the 3rd's who failed to raise a team for the 1st time this season.

The 1st beat Selkirk 23 - 17 with tries from Neil Smail, Scott MacDonald and Kevin Amos. Amo also kicked a drop goal and Greg Laidlaw kicked a penalty and converted Smail's try. The win was tempered by injuries to Ross Goodfellow and Jason Gill who both hurt their knees.

The 2nds beat Gala 2nds 12 - 6 in a game affected by some funny refereeing. Robin Laing scored all of Jed's points with 4 penalties.

4th Dec                                               Triple Misery For Jed

All  3 of Jed's teams lost this afternoon for the 1st time in ages. The 1sts lost 30 - 19 to league leaders Stirlng County which was no real surprise considering our injury list, we have 7 props injured and we were missing 7 or 8 1st team players yesterday.

Stirling started with a bang and they scored a try within the 1st 10 minutes but Jed closed the gap through a Greg Laidlaw penalty. Jed's injury problems worsened when David Grieve had to come off with a bad back injury which meant Murray Brown had to come on and because he was Jed's only front row cover the rest of the game had to be played with uncompetitive scrums. Jed struggled for the rest of the 1st half and Stirling scored 2 more tries and Greg kicked another penalty to make it 17 - 6 at half time.

Jed were now playing with the wind but Stirling stretched their lead through a try and penalty but Jed got right back into the game through a Ross Goodfellow try converted by Greg Laidlaw, who also kicked 2 monster penalties. This was as close as Jed could get as Stirling closed the game with a penalty to make the final score 30 - 19.

The 2nds lost their unbeaten record when they went down 18 - 13 at the hands of Edinburgh Accies 2nds. Jed's points came from a cracking team try finished by Paul cranston and converted by Robin Laing. Robin also kicked 2 drop goals.

The 3rds lost 32 - 7 to Berwick A with Jed's points coming from a typical Kevin Liddle try scored from 5 yards wich was converted by Craig Tibbets. Jed were forced to finish the game with 12 players because of injuries to Michael Ferguson, John Scott and Harry Hogg. Yes you read right Harry Hogg answered an S.O.S last week and he started again yesterday he was not alone in the old man brigade as he was joined by Lids, Tommy Heard and Kevin (Woody) Woods.

22nd Nov                                          Jed Crash Out Of Cup

Jed crashed out of the BT Cup on Saturday, going down 40 - 17 at the hands of Watsonians. Jed got off to a terrible start with Bevan Hart being sin binned for twice coming  into the ruck from the side and we were soon 17 - 3 behind. Jason Gill got Jed back into the game with a try just before half time to make it 17 - 10 (Greg Laidlaw converted).

A Watsonians try and penalty and a Scott Laidlaw try, again converted by Greg made the score 27 - 17. Jed did have chances but 2 spurned over laps when the try line was looming allowed Watsonians to coast home and they stretched away to win 40 - 17.

18th Nov                                      Laidlaw in Scotland 7s Squad

Clark Laidlaw has been selected for the final squad for the 1st 2 rounds of the new IRB 7S season. Clark will be going to Dubai on Dec 1st and 2nd then Georgia on the 10th and 11th. Scotland are competing in all of the IRB 7s this season so Clark will have a busy time of it. The full story can found on the Scotsman website here.

13th Nov                                               Jed Back On Track

Jed got their league campaign back on track last night with a convincing 25 - 10 victory over Berwick at Riverside. Greg Laidlaw, making his first start for Jed got things going with a penalty. Ross Goodfellow then went over after a scrum near the Berwick line, Greg Laidlaw converted. Amo was next to score when he went over in the corner, Greg converted and the half time score was 17 - 3 as Berwick had kicked an earlier penalty.

Greg got things going again for Jed when he kicked another penalty early in the second half. Ross Goodfellow then scored again from the back of a scrum to complete Jed's scoring. This was with 25 minutes to go and we were dreaming of bonus points and more tries but once again we let things slip and allowed Berwick to creep back into the game. They managed to score a try with 15 minutes to go but it was not enough. Roy McFarlane came on for Berwick as a late replacement.

11th Nov                                          McGarva Cops 16 Week Ban

Gary McGarva has been handed a whopping 16 week ban for his dismissal against Murrayfield Wanderers last month. Gary and Jed decided to appeal for leniency as Gary has never been in trouble before and the hearing was on Tuesday night. Following the hearing in which statements were made by Gary and Ian Tunnah amongst others Gary was found guilty of serious foul play and he is not eligible to play again until the 5th of February 2005.

Other news see Roy McFarlane leaving Jed and switching to local rivals Berwick. Roy had found himself a little down the pecking order and was getting increasingly frustrated at being stuck in the 2nds. Berwick have been after Roy for a while and he has decided to try for a starting place with them. Everybody at Jed wishes Roy all the best for the future.

_______________________________

6th Nov                                                   Jed Dismal at Dundee

Jed suffered their worst defeat of the season today going down by 28 points to nil at Dundee. Jed were 10 - 0 down at half time and things just got worse. Ali Campbell said it was just an awful performance by the whole squad.

The 2nds fared better though in a 19 - 15 victory over Ayr 2nds. Jed's points came from a Michael Graham try and Robin Laing conversion, Robin also kicked 4 penalties. There was a sting in the tail though. Gary Hughes only lasted 1 minute of the game and it looks like he has broken a leg.

The 3rd also collected full points but is was by default. Gala YM only had 11 players so Eithie and Lyndsay Dixon played for Gala with Jed getting the points. Ian Hedley scored Jed's try and Mr 3rds turned traitor scored a try for Gala.

30th Oct                                                      Jed Scrape through

Jed are through to the 4th round draw of the B.T. Cup after beating Glasgow Accies 25 - 15 yesterday but only after an almighty scare. Jed raced to a 12 - 0 lead after 10 minutes through tries by Neil Smail and Simon Lightbody and they stretched that lead to 22 - 0 at half time with Simon Lightbody adding his second and Scott Laidlaw weighing in with a try. The second half was a different story though and Jed slowly leaked points and allowed them back into game through 2 tries and a penalty and within 7 points through some very scrappy play. Clark Laidlaw did calm Jed's nerves late on with his now customary drop goal to seal the game and send Jed through.

Jed's Team Manager, Ali Campbell was not at all happy though and said if we play like we did in the second half in next weeks game at Dundee, we will get beat by 50 points.

The Seconds had a week off this week and the 3rds benefited with several of the seconds backs contributing in a thumping 67 - 0 victory over league leaders Tynedale A. The score was also made easier by the fact this was Tynedale's 3rd team as their 2nds had a cup game.

24th Oct                                             Hat Trick of Wins for Jed's Teams

Jed had another great day yesterday when for the first time in long enough all three of our teams won.

The 1sts had a game of very contrasting halves when they beat Haddington 21 - 15. Jed were leading 13 - 5 at half time although it could easily have been more had we held on to the ball near their line through  tries by Kevin Amos and Jason Gill with Clark Laidlaw adding a drop goal. Amo scored another try early in the second half  but the rest of the game could easily be forgotten  by Jed, cause for some reason we went to sleep so did most of the crowd and we allowed them back into the game. So much so that we were hanging on for dear life at the end and all we could show for the rest of the second half was an Amo penalty and a narrow win.

The seconds produced another great team performance in a 29 - 7 victory over Aberdeen 2nds up at Aberdeen. Gary Hughes was once again the main points contributor with a 100% kicking record of 5 penalties and 2 conversions to tries by Nik Eager and Roy McFarlane.

The 3rds recorded their 1st win of the season by beating Hawick Quins 22 - 15. With Jed fielding a strong team  including Bevan Hart and Scott MacDonald returning from injury they score tries through Kevin Liddle (2) although it should have been 3 but when clean through for his 1st try he over ran the dead ball line and touched down past  the line. Jed's other scorers were Nicky Bates and Ross MacDonald, Bevan Hart added a conversion.

17th Oct                                               Jed win comes at a cost

Jed kept up the pressure on league leaders Stirling County with a 26 - 6 victory over Murrayfield Wanderers but it has come with a hefty cost because Gary McGarva our mercurial goal kicker could be out for weeks after being sent off for what looked some serious foul play. With the whistle blown for half time the Murrayfield full back seemed to swing at Gary but Gary took exception to that and it seems he may have head butted him in retaliation. If this is proven to be the case Gary could be out for a very long time.

The game it's self started very slowly for Jed with Murrayfield having all the game and getting a penalty. It took Jed 25 minutes to get into their half and Jason Gill romped in for Jed's 1st try, Gary McGarva kicked a penalty and the half time score was  8- 6 to Jed. The second half was just as controversial. Murrayfield had a new prop sin binned straight after coming on and Jed took advantage with Jason scoring his second try and Amo converting. When the prop came back on he only lasted 15 minutes before he was sent off for a second yellow card. This made it easier for Jed and a monster drop goal by Clark Laidlaw and a cheeky try by Ross Goodfellow completed Jed's victory. A full report is on the match report page.

Jed 2nds also enjoyed a successful trip to Murrayfield Wanderers with a 27-11 win to maintain their unbeaten start to the season. It was a tough match against a fairly useful side with a big set of forwards. Murrayfield struck first when a poor chase from a kick out of defence allowed them to counter and touch down in the corner. Jed however hut back almost immediately with a try from Nick Eager after some superb driving from the Jed pack the conversion put Jed 7-5 up but they couldn't cross the line again in the first half and a penalty gave Murrayfield a lead of 8-7 at half time. Playing with the wind in the second half Jed controlled most of the match and scored tries through wingers Ian Williams and Roy  MacFarlane, both converted by Gary Hughes who also added a penalty. Greig Laidlaw who had a fine match at stand off also added a drop goal. Best for Jed was Rob Ferguson who had an outstanding game with some fine play in the loose again Nick Burt also put in a good shift and Woody had another solid performance at inside centre.

The 3rds also kept up their 100% record. Unfortunately they got beat again 13 - 12 by Kelso 2nds but in a very close game. Jed's points came tries by Lindsay Dixon and Steen Weekly with Weekly adding a conversion. They had chances to win the game from penalties but they fell by the wayside once again.

12th Oct                                             Glasgow Accies for Jed in Cup

Jed have been draw to play Glasgow Academicals in the 3rd round of the BT Cup. This is the stage of the competition where all the premier Division clubs join in and every one of them have to play away from home therefore we face the tricky task of playing them in Glasgow. Accies are currently 3rd in National division 2 and beat St Boswells 69 -10 in the previous round. The game is to be played on the 30th of October.

10th Oct                                                        Great Day for Jed

Yesterday was a great day for Jed with both the 1sts and seconds recording great wins against previously unbeaten teams at Riverside.

The 1sts produced a fantastic defensive display to beat Graham Sheils Stew Mel 21-11. With the Jed defense forcing several errors when Stew Mel had scoring chances it was vital that Jed took their chances and Garty McGarva did just that. In a near faultless kicking display he kicked 6 out of 7 penalties and also landed a drop goal to score all of Jeds points. Stew Mel did score the only try of the match but it was only a late consolation try. This moves Jed into a 3 way tie for 2nd place behind Stirling County and things are looking very promising for the rest of the season. A full report is on the match report page./

                                                                                     Jed 2nds 20-19 GHA 2nds

After being beaten twice by GHA when Jed were runners up to them in the 3rd division last year, it was most definitely a case of third time lucky as the only two unbeaten teams in division 2 clashed on Woodend on Saturday. It was always going to be a tight game with little between the sides. Jed drew first blood with a Gary Hughes penalty but on the 1/2 hour mark GHA eventually broke the deadlock with a well worked try which was converted. Jed responded with a penalty to make it 7-6 at the break. The second half started poorly for Jed as they conceded an early try out wide after it looked like a good man and ball tackle from Chris Richards had stopped, however they recycled and shipped it to the opposite flank to outstrip the defence.Jed then pressed hard in attack and were rewarded after Nick Eager stole back possession at a line out to allow a superb handling move from the backline which resulted in Gareth Scott (who had replaced the injured Nod Laing in the first half) crashing over in the corner the conversion was missed to leave Jed trailing 11-12.Jed were in the ascendancy and with the ref playing advantage to Jed with a straightforward penalty to come, they were shell-shocked when Rob Ferguson was the yellow carded as he rucked the man out to release the ball. To their credit though, this only inspired the team to try even harder and with 14 men   were twice able to gain great field position for first Gary Hughes and then Gareth Scott to drop goals to give Jed a 17-11 lead. Just as Jed were restored to 15 men for the final 10 minutes, disaster struck as it looked as if the pack had thwarted GHA, the backs leaked a fairly soft try near the posts which gave them a 19-17 lead. Desperate for the points Jed went on the attack again and went close after another mighty line out drive from the pack went close, however they were awarded a penalty 5m from the try line but only 5m from the touchline but up stepped Gary Hughes to slot home the match winner from the wrong side for a left footer. Not content to hang on Jed actually finished the game with another kickable chance which was duly booted into the corner to seal the game. An all round gutsy performance with Gareth Scott, Greig Laidlaw,Pip Renwick and Chris Richards making comebacks from injury all showing their class, up front it was a good solid effort with Paul Cranston who has had better days throwing in, showing what a good leader he is, with some straight talking to the team when went 19-17 down. Nick Burt did well again this week after being on the end of some big hits he showed some guts to get back on and back up Donald Grieve who had a good solid performance .GHA were as expected a very useful outfit with their defence especially well organized and effective, it should be some rematch at Braidholm in January.

5th Oct                                                   Jed win local derby

Jed kept up their great run with a convincing 35 - 10 victory over Kelso at Poynder Park on Saturday. Playing against the wind in the first half was a bit of a struggle with Kelso having most of the play but Jed managed to get to half time 10 - 3 in front thanks to a McGarva Penalty and an interception try by Simon Lightbody.

The second half started the same but tries from Simon Lightbody and Jason Gill killed the Kelso resolve and 2 more Jed tries from Kym Townsend and Neil Smail sealed a good victory without any injury problems. The full report, along with last weeks report is on the Match Reports page.

The 2nds also continued their good start to their League campaign in Division 2 with a fine 35 - 10 win at Cartha Queens Park. Despite losing an early try, Jed hit a purple patch in the middle of the 1st half and scored 3 cracking tries through Robin Laing, Roy McFarlane and Robert Freguson to go 20 -5 ahead at the break. With the wind in CQP's favour the 2nd half was disappointing (not helped by some dodgy refereeing decisions). A try from Roy McFarlane made the game safe but it wasn't till late in the game that Alan Armstrong crossed for the last try. Nick Burt, Tim Van Vliet, Robert Ferguson & late call up Tom Elliot had good games and Greg Laidlaw also got his 1st action for over a year with a solid 30 minutes in the second half. Remember all the leagues can be found on the League page

The 3rds were also in action but the were always up against it when they could only muster 13 players and they duly went down 67 - 0 to a very strong Penrith 2nds.

26th Sept                                            3 In A Row For Jed

Jed secured their third successive win with a 23-13 win over Edinburgh Accies. In a tight match that could have gone either way late  tries from young Neil Smail and the not so young Kevin Amos secured the points for the home side. Clark Laidlaw marked his comeback with a couple of drop goals.

Jed 2nds kept their 100% league record intact to secure a double for Jed against Edin Accies with a fine 43-27 victory. A 90 metre interception try by Vinny was the turning point in the match as tries from Nod Laing, James Hogg and Euan Kelly followed helped with a faultless kicking display by Gary Hughes.

Jed 3rds meanwhile lost 45-5 up at the glebe against Carlisle 2nds, again it was tight at half-time but the fitness was lacking in the latter stages. Des Paxton scored the Jed try in his first outing in many moons.

11th Sept                                               Jed Beat Selkirk

Jed got their league campaign back on track with a 27 - 13 victory over Selkirk yesterday at Riverside. In a game of 2 contrasting halves where the wind played a major part in the game the 1st half was Selkirk's and 2 penalties by Rutherford gave them a 6 - 0 lead but Jed did have a try disallowed when the referee ruled that Donald Grieve had made a double movement.

The second half was a complete change around and playing with the wind helped Gary McGarva kick 3 quick penalties. Just when Jed were looking in control some slack tackling allowed Selkirk to score very much against the run of play. That was Selkirk's lot though and a Kevin Amos try converted by McGarva put Jed back in front. A drop goal by Amo and another McGarva penalty put the game safe. Jed also had a last hurrah when Neil Smail went over in the corner to put the seal on a solid debut for him and a good all round victory for the team.

Gary Elder securing posesion for Jed

The 2nds also enjoyed a fine victory when they beat Currie 2nds 38 - 20 on Woodend. This was a very good win against a team relegated from the 1st division of the seconds league and sets a very good standard for the rest of the season. It also proved that we have real competition for places in several possitions. Star man was Robin Laing who scored 28  of Jed's points with 2 tries, 2 drop goals, 2 penalties and 3 conversions. Ali Hall and Iain Williams scored Jed's other tries.

James Hogg feeds the scrum in the 2nds game                   Man of the match Robin Laing adding to his points haul

The 3rds did not fare so well and were beaten 37 - 0 by Berwick 2nds at Scremerston. Jed were hampered by the fact that 15 of the 17 squad were forwards and the back line was. Tom Elliot (9), Scott Martin (10), Lindsay Dickson (11), Eric Wright (12), Gary Young (13), John Oliver (14) and Paul Cranston (15).

5th Sept                                                    Jed suffer 1st defeat

Jed tasted defeat for the 1st time this season yesterday when narrowly losing 33 - 27 at Stirling County. Jed were 12 - 0 down before we found our feet but a try from Ross Goodfellow, McGarva Converted and kicked a penalty to get us back in the game only for us to let Stirling score again and take a 24 - 10 half time lead. The second half was more of the same with Stirling stretching  to a 33 - 17 lead (another R. Goodfellow try & McGarva conversion). Jed were not for giving up though and another try scored by Neil Tunnah, with McGarva converting and adding a penalty got Jed within 6 points and gave us a chance. Jed were going for broke and they had a chance but a slack pass round Neil Smail's ankles which he was unable to control when the try line was beckoning was Jed's last hurrah. Although it was not a win Jed can take heart in the bonus point gained for the narrow loss and the excellent debut of Gary Elder in the second row.

The 2nds won their friendly against Morpeth 2nds 64 - 21 but Morpeth only turned up with 13 players so Craig Thompson and coach Calum Brown helped them out. Although not really a competitive game it was another useful run out before the start of the league next week.

The 3rds also enjoyed a 21-17 victory over Eyemouth Seahorses with a thrilling comeback to win their first game of the season. Trailing 17 -7 with 10 minutes to go Jed score 2 late tries through Scott Martin and Stuart Davidson with Graig Tibbits adding the conversions. Paul Cranston scored Jed's other try again converted by Tibbs.

2nd Sept                                     Jed's 1st Silverware of the season

I know its late but I just got the photo today but here goes anyway. The photo on the right is of the successful Jed Tug 'O' War squad that beat all comers to win the Tug 'O' War competition at Kelso Agricultural Show last month. Jed were so dominant on the day that we could afford to juggle the squad to rest pullers in some ties and we never lost a single pull until the final.

In the final, where we were up against Melrose Rugby club, who were the other dominant team, we lost the first pull (but sssshhh, cause we had to make it 1-1 to get the crowd involved). We then went on to win the next 3 pulls to show everyone who the Daddy's were on the day and collect the cup and £300 beer money (which was spent wisely up the street in Kelso)

28th Aug                                                Jed Off To A Great Start

Jed maintained their unbeaten start to the season with a convincing 23 - 0 victory against Peebles this afternoon. Despite missing several key players and starting very nervously, Jed dug in well and a single penalty by Gary McGarva gave Jed a 3 - 0 half time lead.

Jed seemed to respond to the coaches half time talk and they soon kicked another penalty. Then Jed's moment of the matgch came when Jamie McCraw fielded a Peebles kick in his own half and raced round the opposition winger to score a great try, McGarve converted. Another penalty stretched Jed's lead before new prop Kym Townsend got driven over by the pack to secure the game, McGarva again converted.

Although not a classic, a win is  great way to start the league campaign and there is plenty to work on.

The 2nds first run out this season saw them lose 28 - 6 in a friendly against a strong looking Darlington team. Gary Hughes kicked Jed's points.

25th Aug                                              More Injury worries for Jed

Jed's injury jinx has struck again with the news that Bevan Hart has injured some ligaments in his knee and he will be out for around 3 months. To compound Jed's problems Jason Gill, Ali Hall and Roy McFarlane are both unavailable so Jed's squad is already being stretched to it's limits. The team for Saturdays game against Peebles is on the team news page.

23rd Aug                                                  Nightmare Draw for Jed

The draw has been made for Sundays Selkirk 7s and Jed have been handed a very tough draw. We play the Royal Scots in the 1st round and if we get through, we will meet either Berwick or a Scottish Development 7. The defending champions, Rotherham have been forced to withdraw because of financial problems and they have been replaced by Watsonians. The full draw is on the 7s page.

23rd Aug                                                 Jed Keep up Momentum

Jed maintained their unbeaten start to the season in a scrappy 17-10 victory over Morpeth on Saturday. Jed scored 3 tries through Ross Goodfellow, Simon Lightbody and Michael Graham, with Kevin Amos who played at stand off due to a slight injury worry for Garry McGarva who pulled out on Thursday night and the unavailability of Clark Laidlaw who is still recovering from a broken bone in his foot adding a conversion. Neil Cook and Kym Townsend suffered slight knocks but of more concern was a knee injury sustained by Bevan Hart, lets hope it's not to serious.

Although it was a win Jed will need to step up a gear for the start of the league campaign on Saturday against Peebles.

17th Aug                                                      Friendly for Jed

Jed head over the border to Morpeth on Saturday for a training friendly to complete their preparations for the 1st league game against Peebles. The game will be played in 3 x 30 minutes periods and will give Jed the chance to blood new Kiwi prop Kym Townsend who arrived on Monday night to complete the squad for the season. The game will also give other new boys Ali Hall, 2nd row signed from Morpeth and Bevan Hart who played for St Boswells a couple of seasons ago another chance to blend into the squad.

14th Aug                                                       Jed Win Kelso 7s

Jed's season got of to a great start at Poynder Park today when they won the annual Kelso 7s tournament. Despite being disrupted by the late withdrawal of Tim Van Vliet, who was replaced by Jamie McCraw in the squad and the fact that Jed had not trained for the 7s.

The first game was against a presidents team who did stick in well but a Kevin Amos hatrick saw them off, Jed winning 24-0 in the end.

The second game saw Jed come up against Selkirk who had demolished Peebles in the first round but Jed steeped up a gear with new boy Bevan Hart looking decidedly useful. Jed won 26-12. The game came at a cost though, as Scott Laidlaw limped off after turning an ankle.

The Semi final was a much better game and Jed raced to a 12-0 lead inside the first 3 minutes and some great pressurizing team work did the job and Jed were beginning to look like a team who wanted to help each other and won 24-12.

The final was very much in the same mould with Jed having to work for every score against a committed Melrose side and the game was a tight affair until the last 5 minutes with Ross Goodfellow on fire and scoring 4 tries in the end. The final score was 33-19.

This was a great start for Jed and it would be a shame to single out any one player, I was very impressed with Bevan Hart and Gary McGarva, Donald Grieve also did some great work when he was called on for Scott Laidlaw, as did Ross Goodfellow who played his heart out all day considering he was in his sick bed on Thursday night but it was Jason Gill who was named man of the Tournament by the Radio Borders commentators. The rest of the results are on the 7s page.

Talking of Radio Borders. I urge all, you ex-pats and parents of some of our overseas players to listen in on a Saturday because some of the coverage can be fantastic. Click on the highlighted Radio Borders and I will also put a link on the links page. I will try and keep you up to date when we will be on of the featured matches.

8th Aug                                                            Friendly win for Jed

Jed's build up to the new campaign got of to a very promising start yesterday, when they defeated a strong Heriots squad 33-31 in a friendly training match played under blistering conditions at Riverside. Although it would be folly to look too much into the match played in 20 minute segments and with everyone at both clubs getting a game at some point, team manager Ali Campbell was full of praise for our boys. He said "everyone looked sharp and fit and all the planed moves worked well and were really well organized considering it was our first outing". He also gave the team a clean bill of health after the game which is always a bonus. Heriots, playing there 2nd pre season friendly were also very complimentary about our organization for our first outing and they were also very complimentary on the state of our pitch, saying "it was like playing on a carpet".

Jed scorers for the record were, Nicky Burt, Jason Gill, Robert Ferguson and Tim Van Vliet all score tries, Kevin amos landed a drop goal and a conversion and Gary McGarva completed the scoring with 2 penalties and a conversion.
